*Vintage Style Birdcages ~ Arriving Soon!*

I've just ordered some of the
today!
*hurray*
These are so so popular & they just fly out of Vintage Amethyst HQ,
but seemingly so from my supplier too who always seems to have them for such a short
while before they are gone & I have to wait months for them to arrive again!
So I was all ready first thing this morning to put my order in as I knew they were arriving today & I have so many brides waiting for them!
So they should be available again in the Vintage Amethyst boutique by the end of next week hopefully!

If you missed reading Monday's post

*Pretty Vintage Style Glass*

These lovely glass dishes arrived in the Vintage Amethyst boutique a few weeks ago.

A lovely & deep dish which is so useful for many things but is also a truly decorative peice for anywhere in the home.
Perfect for the bedroom for pretty jewellery, bon bons & sweeties at Christmas, as a candle holder & ideal as a pretty gift.
The dish is made from really thick chunky glass & looks wonderfully vintage in style.

They cost only £5.00 & can be found *here*
The necklaces are some of my Nana's old vintage necklaces which I inherited & just love.
I usually have them placed draped over my dressing table mirror but I thought they would look lovely in this photo with a thrifted mirror that I painted & aged.
Also newly arrived in the boutique are these really adorable heart shaped glass tea-light holders.

These are really pretty & terribly romantic.
A pretty glass heart with has a ridged outer edge so when a candle is lit it throws beautiful rays of light all around the heart.
Such a pretty little item & so vintage & romantic in style.
Absolutely perfect as a pretty gift idea & would be so beautiful added to wedding tables.

These are only £3.00 each & can be found *here*
These have been so popular since they arrived with brides for their wedding tables & they really are so perfect for weddings but also for a really sweet & pretty gift too don't you think?
The vintage tea cup & saucer sneaking into view in the photo is part of a lovely vintage tea set that also belonged to my Nana which I just love.
I really hope you love these new pretty glasswares as I just think they are so lovely.
I have one of the pretty glass dishes dressing the little grey cabinet I blogged about a few weeks ago ~ see *here* to refresh your memory & also you may be able to see one of the little heart shaped tea-light holders on the top too sitting alongside a vintage bon bon jar & I think they all work together lovely.

*Blackberry & Apple Crumble*

I think Blackberry & Apple crumble has to be my favourite Autumn time dessert.
With bushes laden with blackberries at the moment what better time to get out & about picking them & turning them into something delicious, warming & comforting ~ perfect for a Sunday afternoon.
This recipe is from the wonderful Rachel Allen.

Ingredients
4 large cooking apples, peeled, cored and cut into big chunks
1 tbsp water
3 tbsp sugar
225 g fresh or frozen blackberries, or mixed berries
For the crumble:
170 g plain flour
75 g butter
75 g demerara sugar

Method
Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4.
Put the apple chunks, water and sugar into a saucepan over a lowish heat and cook until the apples are soft and mushy; this should take about 10 minutes. While cooking, stir it every minute or so to prevent sticking. Taste and add more sugar if it needs it.
Transfer the apple pulp into individual bowls or one big pie dish and allow to cool slightly. Stir the berries into the apples.
To make the crumble, rub the butter into the flour until it resembles very coarse breadcrumbs. However, if you rub it too much the crumble will not be crunchy. Combine with the sugar. Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the slightly cooled apple and bake for 15 mins for small crumbles or 30-45 mins for larger crumbles. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

*Time to get your old sweaters out*

Ok so it is definitely Autumn now isn't it & time to get those old sweaters out, but if you pull one out that has seen better days what about making it into a cosy cushion cover?
A perfect craft for an Autumn afternoon.

To make this sham, you'll need an 18-inch square pillow insert and a large sweater, cut into two 19-inch squares.
Sew the right sides of the wool together along the edges, leaving the bottom open.
Turn right side out and insert the pillow form, then stitch the bottom closed. For the flower, cover a two-inch circle of card stock with a piece of a thin sweater; hot-glue to the circle's back.
Next, fold a 3- by 20-inch strip of another sweater in half lengthwise.
Glue the edges together, then sew a running stitch down the strip lengthwise along the glued seam.
Once you've stitched the entire length, pull the thread to gather the fabric and knot.
Hot-glue the gathered edge in a circle to the back of the card stock, then hot-glue a pin-back in the center and affix to the pillow.

*Delicious Death Cake*

Yesterday was the 120th anniversary of the birth of the absolutely wonderful
Agatha Christie.
As some of you may know I love Agatha Christie with of course my favourite books & tv shows being the wonderfully eccentric detective Hercule Poirot & the ever morally sound & yet ever so slightly nosey Miss Marple.
Anyhoo what better way to celebrate than with a delicious death birthday cake like the one from A Murder is Announced!
(ooohhh I do love that story)

Recipe from Jane Asher as featured on the Agatha Christie website.
Introduction by Mathew Prichard
There is nothing more indulgent than afternoon tea. I have particularly fond memories of the lazy afternoons spent with my grandmother, Agatha Christie, at Greenway as she tried out her latest ideas on us over a pot of tea and delicious cakes.
As a thank you to her fans the world over we have invited the queen of party cakes, Jane Asher, to create a recipe for Delicious Death as a novel way to mark the 120th anniversary. The recipe is inspired by a passage in one of the Miss Marple books, her 50th novel, A Murder is Announced.
I hope that you will enjoy this truly decadent cake; the dark Belgian chocolate centre and the zing of its brandy soaked cherry and ginger filling. I'm certain my grandmother would have loved it.

--------------------------------

Ingredients
175g dark chocolate drops (50-55% cocoa solids)
100g softened or spreadable butter
100g golden caster sugar
5 large eggs
½ tsp vanilla extract
100g ground almonds
½ tsp baking powder

For the filling

150ml rum, brandy or orange juice
150g raisins
55g soft dark brown sugar
6-8 glace cherries
4-6 pieces crystallized ginger
1 tsp lemon juice

For the decoration

175g dark chocolate drops (50-55% cocoa solids)
150ml double cream
2 tsps apricot jam
10g crystallized violet petals
10g crystallized rose petals
1 small pt of gold leaf

-------------------------------

Method

Pre-heat the oven to 150ºC, (300ºF, 135ºC fan assisted). Grease an 8” deep cake tin and line the bottom with baking parchment or silicone.

Prepare the filling: in a small saucepan, combine all the ingredients and stir over heat until the mixture is bubbling. Allow to simmer gently, while stirring, for at least 2 minutes, or until most of the liquid has evaporated and the mixture is thickened. Allow to cool.

In a small heatproof bowl, melt the chocolate drops over simmering water or in a microwave, being careful not to let it overheat. Set aside to cool for a few minutes.

Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl until very pale and fluffy. Separate the eggs, setting aside the whites in a large mixing bowl, and, one by one, add 4 of the yolks to the butter/sugar mix, beating well between each one.

Add the melted chocolate and fold in carefully, then stir in the vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, mix together the ground almonds and baking powder, then stir them into the cake mix.

Whisk the egg whites until peaked and stiff, then fold gently into the chocolate cake mix.

Spoon the mix into the prepared cake tin, levelling the top, and bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 55-65 minutes, or until firm and well risen. Allow the cake to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before turning it out on to a rack to cool completely.

Using a serrated knife, slice the cake in half horizontally. Spread the cooled fruit filling onto one half and sandwich the two halves back together.

To decorate: put the chocolate and cream in a heatproof bowl and melt them together over simmering water or in a microwave. Spread the cake all over with warmed apricot jam and place on a rack over a baking tray. Keeping back a couple of tablespoonfuls, pour the icing over the whole cake, making sure it covers the top and the sides completely, scooping up the excess from the tray with a palette knife as necessary. Add any surplus to the kept back icing. Carefully transfer the cake to a 10” cake board or pretty plate.

Once the reserved icing is firm enough to pipe, place it in a piping bag with no. 8 star nozzle and pipe a scrolling line around the top and bottom edges of the cake. Leave for 2-3 hours, to set.

Place the violet and rose petals into a plastic bag and crush them into small flakes. Sprinkle these liberally around the chocolate scrolls. Finally, with a cocktail stick, pull off some small flakes of gold leaf and gently add them to the top of the cake.

'Hi Alison,

I had them posted to my mum and dads address as I work during the week, I was very excited when my dad txt me at work to let me know I had received parcels. I couldn't wait to finish work to go and open them, which I did with my mum, it was like christmas.

I love the way you wrapped everything with a ribbon and tag, lovely touch.

I am so pleased with all the goodies and I know they are going to look fantastic adorning my wedding table and decorating the room. I love it all and will most definately be ordering from you again.

Thankyou again.

As you know Vintage Amethyst has a lot of brides visiting for pretty wedding day accessories & a few months ago I was pleased to see that one of my wedding customers was featured on
The photos were absolutely adorable & Vintage Amethyst even got a mention for supppling some of the pretty accessories such as the rosebud heart, rose garland & butterfly garlands as featured here.
I really wanted to share with you all some of the pretty photos of the day & the lovely photographer kindly agreed for me to use these.
So thank you so much Anna.
Anna Hardy is a wonderful photographer & so do pop by her lovely website to see her work as it is just absolutely beautiful ~ visit Anna *here*
Unfortunately I can't point you in the direction of the lovely article from Love My Dress as a family member wasn't happy with the exposure of the wedding, so Love My Dress had to remove it, which is totally fine as many people are not happy to have so much exposure on the internet are they?
But if you visit Anna Hardy's website you can see a lovely write up of the wedding & the wonderfully beautiful photos of the special day that the very talented Anna captured.

*The Boutique is Open*

The Vintage Amethyst Boutique is now open again!
I had a lovely week not having work or the boutique to think about & it was just what I needed, we didn't have a holiday as such as James is busy busy with portrait commissions at the moment but as there is lots going on with me personally I really needed a week to myself away from work. So I had a week of relaxing & revamping, as I've been busy decorating which was just what I needed as being self employed & working from home with a busy business certainly takes over your life somewhat, so it was lovely to catch up with the house a bit & do what I enjoy doing.
But work is definitely back on the agenda as a few minutes after opening the first order came through!
*smile*

P.S This cute sign was one I found outside a vintage/retro shop in St Ives last year, sweet isn't it ...

*The Little Grey Cabinet*

Remember the little cabinet I picked up a few weeks ago (blogged here) well it was soon all prettied & now here it is as I know some of you wanted to see it finished.
It now sits in the living room beside the sofa & blends perfectly with the other painted furniture & decor in the room.
I was going to paint it in Farrow & Balls Cornforth White & we went to a local independent shop to get it mixed up (as luckily they do this as we only have Homebase's limited palette of F & B colours otherwise!) but as we were stood at the counter waiting to be served we spotted some paints which had been reduced & they had this wonderful grey called 'Wolf Grey' & it looked just perfect. The lady who came to serve us said that these paints were really good (I think they were a heritage style paint from Johnstone's) & so we decided to go with this one plus it was only £4.99 for the tin, so bargain!
Anyhoo I'm so glad we did as I just love this colour!
I wanted a little pretty galss knob for it & found one on Ebay for £4.50 with postage, so that was added & I think it looks sweet.
I loved this paint so much that some of our bedroom furniture has just been painted in it & so this little tin certainly has gone a long way & for such a bargain price too plus there is even smidgen left for another small project!
*yay*

*Country-Style Hallway*

We are starting to decorate our hall (and we have just done our bedroom too *eek*) & so I am currently having a browse looking for colours, ideas etc & I came across this pretty pretty hallway over at Ideal Home.
Our front door doesn't open into our living room, as with most Victorian houses we have a vestibule & then a hallway but I thought this look was so totally sweet don't you ...

Country-style hallway
If your front door opens into a living-cum-dining area as with this home, a small console table and handy desk near the entrance will define the space.
