*Painted Dresser*

Well thank you all so much for your lovely comments about the cake, if you haven't tried the recipe certainly do, I'm sure you won't be disappointed ~ good 'ol Nigella.

Anyhoo, a lot of people have asked about the colour I had painted our pine dresser. I painted it in 'Off White' Oil Eggshell from Farrow & Ball. It is more of a creamy colour than I thought it was going to be but once it was on it looked really lovely.

I painted it two & a half years ago & it has started to wear a little as we use the dresser so much so a couple of months ago I gave it all a light distressing to hide this fact until we get around to painting it again as it is quite a big paint job to do!

I'm still not certain yet if to go with the same colour again, I was thinking of another colour as when I first did it the walls were Silver Birch by Laura Ashley which was a lovely really soft pale green colour but then we painted the room Matt Barley White by Dulux which I just love but is quite creamy too so I wanted a little more contrast but now I'm looking at the dresser again I'm not sure ...

oh decisions decisions ...

*Chocolate Guinness Cake ~ Yummy!*

Last week it was my lovely husband's birthday. I always make a birthday cake & this year I plumped for Nigella's Chocolate Guiness Cake.

*Recipe*

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE CAKE
250ml Guinness
250g unsalted butter
75g cocoa
400g caster sugar
1 x 142ml pot sour cream
2 eggs
1 tablespoon real vanilla extract
275g plain flour
2 1/2teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

FOR THE TOPPING
300g Philadelphia cream cheese
150g icing sugar
125ml double or whipping cream
Serving Size : Makes about 12 slices ~ unless your really greedy like us!

METHOD

1.Preheat the oven to gas mark 4/180°C, and butter and line a 23cm springform tin.

2.Pour the Guinness into a large wide saucepan, add the butter – in spoons or slices – and heat until the butter’s melted, at which time you should whisk in the cocoa and sugar. Beat the sour cream with the eggs and vanilla and then pour into the brown, buttery, beery pan and finally whisk in the flour and bicarb.

3.Pour the cake batter into the greased and lined tin and bake for 45 minutes to an hour. Leave to cool completely in the tin on a cooling rack, as it is quite a damp cake.

4.When the cake’s cold, sit it on a flat platter or cake stand and get on with the icing. Lightly whip the cream cheese until smooth, sieve over the icing sugar and then beat them both together. Or do this in a processor, putting the un-sieved icing sugar in first and blitz to remove lumps before adding the cheese.

5.Add the cream and beat again until it makes a spreadable consistency. Ice the top of the black cake so that it resembles the frothy top of the famous pint.

Now I was slightly sceptical about making it as I really don't like Guinness but it sounded like a 'mans cake' and so for a birthday boy thought it was ideal.

It was really easy to make and I must say it was a really delicious cake. We started with a piece for breakfast of course, as it is our birthday tradition!
James decided it was his favourite cake ever, even over the Green & Blacks delicious mousse cake! Which is just amazing!!!

The icing on the Chocolate Guinness cake is delicious cream cheese frosting and it is soooooo scrummy with this wonderfully rich yet light cake & it really does look like a pint of Guiness, doesn't it?

We were really sad when this cake was all gone, it really is that lovely but I will certainly be making this yummy scrummy cake again!
I will certainly recommend it to everyone & don't worry there isn't a slight taste of Guinness in the cake at all really it just adds to the wonderful richness, so go on & try it, it is certainly worth it ...

*New Image for Vintage Amethyst*

Well I hadn't actually anticipated a whole new look for the Vintage Amethyst website at all at the end of last week, but I had lots of yummy new goodies arriving and so had the sale to sell the last of some of the old lines and just really planned on having a new home page & a little update but once we got started on it at the weekend we just got into the spirit of change and so here we are, a whole new image for Vintage Amethyst!

A new logo, new look website, new collections & new change for the Vintage Amethyst blog too.

It has taken a lot of hard work over the weekend & yesterday to get here, plus we are currently changing web servers too, so at some point in the next 24 hours the shop will be unavailable for the shortest of time whilst the change happens but it will mean an easier time behind the scenes for me which will be most welcome.

I really hope you like the new image & I hope you will pop by and visit the new look boutique & take a peek to see what has changed & all the lovely new homewares on offer ...

Hope to see you there ...
